UOW: Your partner in achieving your best in Year 11 & 12

The University of Wollongong (UOW) is committed to providing additional resources and assistance to help students reach their potential in their final years of school.

The Year 11 & 12 Subject Support Sessions is designed to help students improve their knowledge and understanding of key subject content and discover what HSC exam markers are looking for.

In conjunction with InspirationED, experienced HSC teachers/markers and UOW staff will be running subject revision programs across May, June and July for current Year 11 and Year 12 students.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive tips and strategies directly from the most qualified and experienced HSC markers in NSW.

You can choose the specific subjects you want to focus on, and we've got both online and in-person sessions to fit your schedule. Feel free to attend as many sessions as you'd like (yep, you can even join them all!). Plus, each session—whether online or in-person—will cover different content, so you'll be getting a fresh perspective every time!

And here’s the cherry on top: all webinars and bootcamps are completely FREE! For our brand new science 'Intensive' in Physics,  we've kept the cost very low at $11 to help cover student lunches and materials. PLUS, all attendees will receive an example exam paper with exemplar responses, so you can see exactly what top-tier answers look like and how to nail your own!

In the Year 11 Physics course, your knowledge of waves and energy transfers is expanded through Module 3. Firstly, this course aims to further deepen your understanding of the properties of waves and how these can be examined in an experimental setting. It will focus on two important concepts from the syllabus, refraction and superposition. Furthermore, you will have an opportunity to quantify energy transfers through investigating the specific heat capacity of water and the rate of energy transfer (power). Mastery of both of these areas of physics will be invaluable when conquering the HSC course next year. You will be exposed to experimental techniques that are not readily available in a high school environment and introduce you to a tertiary style of learning. There will be a 2 hour practical lab session with a 45 minute break, followed by a 2 hour theory session.

Fee to attend: $11 - this includes a sausage sizzle and drink at lunch break

Yr 12 Subject Support Science Intensive: Physics

An understanding of the nature of light is crucial to success in the HSC Physics course. As you journey through Modules 7 and 8, you are introduced to how our understanding of light has changed over time. In Physics, the light from excited gases, filaments and celestial objects is examined to gain a deeper knowledge of the source of the light, its properties and its motion. Using spectroscopy, individual wavelengths of light can be investigated and analysed, this is paramount to mastering the astronomy related content from Module 7 - The Nature of Light. To understand the mechanisms that drive the production of different spectra, an advanced knowledge of the atom is required, especially the work of Niels Bohr for Module 8 - From the Universe to the Atom. This course will expose you to experimental. techniques that are not readily available in a high school environment and introduce you to a tertiary style of learning. There will be a 2 hour theory session with a 45 minute break, followed by a 2 hour practical lab session in our Physics labs.
