UOW: Your partner in achieving your best in Year 11 & 12

The University of Wollongong (UOW) is committed to supporting students in their final years of school with additional resources and expert assistance.

Our Year 11 & 12 Subject Support Sessions are designed to deepen students' understanding of key subject content and offer insights into what HSC exam markers are looking for.

In partnership with InspirationED, experienced HSC experts and UOW staff will deliver subject revision sessions on July 15, 16, and 17 for current Year 11 and Year 12 students. Participants will have the exciting opportunity to ask questions and gain valuable tips and strategies.

All sessions are in-person at either the UOW Wollongong or Liverpool campus, and cost $11 to cover lunch and materials. Attendees will receive a sample exam paper with high-quality exemplar responses, providing clear guidance on how to achieve strong exam results.

Yr 11 Subject Support Session: Physics

In the Year 11 Physics course, your knowledge of waves and energy transfers is expanded through Module 3. Firstly, this course aims to further deepen your understanding of the properties of waves and how these can be examined in an experimental setting. It will focus on two important concepts from the syllabus, refraction and superposition. Furthermore, you will have an opportunity to quantify energy transfers through investigating the specific heat capacity of water and the rate of energy transfer (power). Mastery of both of these areas of physics will be invaluable when conquering the HSC course next year. You will be exposed to experimental techniques that are not readily available in a high school environment and that will introduce you to a tertiary style of learning.

There will be a 2-hour practical lab session with a 45-minute break, followed by a 2-hour theory session.

10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Yr 12 Subject Support Session: Physics

An understanding of the nature of light is crucial to success in the HSC Physics course. As you journey through Modules 7 and 8, you are introduced to how our understanding of light has changed over time. In Physics, the light from excited gases, filaments and celestial objects is examined to gain a deeper knowledge of the source of the light, its properties and its motion. Using spectroscopy, individual wavelengths of light can be investigated and analysed, this is paramount to mastering the astronomy related content from Module 7 - The Nature of Light. To understand the mechanisms that drive the production of different spectra, an advanced knowledge of the atom is required, especially the work of Niels Bohr for Module 8 - From the Universe to the Atom. This course will expose you to experimental techniques that are not readily available in a high school environment and introduce you to a tertiary style of learning.

There will be a 2-hour theory session with a 45-minute break, followed by a 2-hour practical lab session in our Physics labs.

Yr 12 Subject Support Session: Chemistry

Put on your safety goggles and lab coats. This HSC Chemistry Support Session is going to be explosive!

You will explore HSC Chemistry modules 5, 6, & 7, covering content from equilibrium and acid reactions to organic chemistry. With guidance from experienced HSC experts, you will develop a thorough theoretical understanding of essential HSC Chemistry concepts including, but not limited to: open and closed chemical systems, Le Chatelier's principle, oxidation reactions, quantitative and qualitative properties of acids and bases, and an increasing societal need for pharmaceuticals, fuels, and polymers. Excitingly, you will also work scientifically and conduct a relevant experiment to consolidate your knowledge into practice in a professional laboratory environment.

There will be a 2-hour theory session with a 45-minute break, followed by a 2-hour practical lab session in our Chemistry labs.
